Have you found yourself just a few minutes late at an empty boarding gate? The feeling is terrible: it’s a mix of anguish and uncertainty. A list of thoughts goes through your mind: now what? Do I need to buy a new ticket? How much will it be? Will it be expensive? Will I get a discount on the next available flight? Will the airline be accountable for my loss? Well, it depends.
First of all, take a deep breath. Freacking out won’t solve anything and will just get in the way.
Two scenarios can lead to missing a flight.
- It was your fault or the airport’s fault
- It was the airline’s fault
Either way, you first have to pick up your luggage, if you checked in any. Ask for assistance from the airline representative.
1. It was My Fault I missed the Flight
If it was your fault, (traffic jam, you were distracted and didn’t board during boarding time, etc.), or you were held in security check for too long, the bad news is that the airline won’t offer any discount for the next flight. Actually, the next available flight will be more expensive and there will be no compensation.
2. It Was the Airlines Fault
It wasn’t your fault, like when a connection flight gets delayed. In that case, the Captain could inform the authorities and your next flight should be free of charge. If any flights are available soon, the airline will give you a ticket. If the flight is the next day, they will provide you with a hotel room to wait for the next flight -yes with meals included. However, if there weren’t any heads-up from the captain, you might not be compensated.
What Next
I know losing a flight is very upsetting, but again, keep calm. After all, what’s the worst thing that can happen? Sure, it’s an extra expense, but if it wasn’t your fault you will be compensated. If you are worrying about your work, you can always show your boss that it wasn’t your fault and you get to enjoy one extra day in Mexico.
Try to be positive and make the most of it. Go somewhere you haven’t been. Or just stay at the hotel, go get some food, relax, and get some rest. Try to go to bed early to get ready for the next flight.
